People of colour are being let down by mental health services according to Young Changemakers.
The Young Changemaker program reports some of the barriers to accessing mental health help include stigma, affordability and lack of “culturally appropriate” mental health care, in addition to a lack of services and fear of being judged.
Dr Tessy Ojo CBE chief executive officer at The Diana Award, said in a statement."Young people with Black and Black mixed-race heritage continue to experience the deep scars of racism on their mental health, compounded by a lack of accessible and relevant support."
Among the team at M Downs, we have members who deliver anti-racism training;helping individuals to recognise and address systemic racism. It does so by deepening participants understanding of racism, identifying
their own biases and privileges, and developing the necessary skills to counter harmful behaviors.
The Young Changemakers program was created by The Diana Award Centre for Mental Health and UK Youth to equip young people with the tools to produce youth-led social action projects aimed at tackling mental health inequalities in racialised communities.
