Common FAQ's: Can you complete a Psychiatric Report?

It's a fairly common enquiry that we receive, and it's always worth pausing to clarify what's being asked, because the answer depends on what you actually need…

Sometimes "psychiatric" is a simple spelling mistake for psychological; it happens more often than you'd think. But there’s also some confusion about the difference between psychiatrists and psychologists, and their roles. Deciding which professional is right for you, depends on the question you need answered.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has specialised in mental health. They can diagnose mental health conditions in medical terms, prescribe medication, and make recommendations about medical treatment. If the question is about medication, a formal medical diagnosis, or a Mental Health Act assessment, a psychiatrist is the right professional.

A psychologist, specifically a clinical psychologist, is trained at doctoral level in psychological assessment, therapy, and formulation. They don't prescribe medication, but they do many things people sometimes assume require a psychiatrist.

For example, a psychologist can carry out cognitive assessments, capacity assessments, screening for neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism or ADHD, personality assessments, and psychological assessments for court proceedings. We can also provide therapy and produce detailed psychological reports for legal, clinical, or occupational purposes.

So when someone asks for a "psychiatric report," we always check. Sometimes what they actually require is a psychological assessment, and that is something we can complete. Sometimes they genuinely need a psychiatrist, for example if the question involves medication or a medical diagnosis, and in those cases we will let you know and point you in the right direction.

If you're not sure whether it's a psychiatrist or a psychologist you need, that's completely normal. The terminology is confusing, and the overlap between the two professions is real. Get in touch, and we'll always be happy to advise on the right path for your situation.
