Reading is a powerful tool that helps children to better understand others, fostering empathy and compassion. It provides language for complex concepts which in turn encourages conversations, self expression or questions.

Books about Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can help children with Autism to better understand the condition and their own unique experiences of it. Seeing characters with ASD can help children to feel understood, validated and valued. Some books may celebrate the achievements of a character or real life person, and can therefore inspire children with ASD to accomplish their own dreams.

It's also vitally important to read books about Autism with children who don't have it, as this promotes understanding, patience, compassion, and empathy. It can help children to navigate frustration, confusion or upset they may experience when unable to understand particular behaviours or traits; such as with a sibling or school friend.

These books help break down stereotypes and myths, and give a voice to those who may not always feel heard or understood. They are able to showcase diversity, highlight strengths and celebrate differences.
